KCCP Member of the Week: Sora Wheeler

It’s that weekly time where you get to know one of your local KCCP members! This week’s feature is Sora Wheeler, a very skilled cosplayer who specializes in adapting video game characters.  He translated his love of Halloween and conventions into what is now a rather large repertoire of costumes.  Check out all he has to say about his cosplays!

How did you get into cosplay?
I think I’ve always been into cosplay with Halloween but it was just dressing up. I didn’t really get into it or know what cosplay was until my first con. After I went to Naka Kon for the first time and saw all the awesome costumes I was hooked and wanted to learn more about it. So I hopped on the Internet and did some research, and found Yaya Han. Not only was she freaking smoking hot her cosplays were amazing, then MTV did a True Life story on cosplay and I was blown away at the costumes from the bigger cons. I found my true love that day and her name was cosplay.

How many characters are you currently cosplaying and what are they?
Right now I’m doing Pyramid head from Silent Hill, 9 Toes from Borderlands, Kevin and Johnny Purge (original characters based off the movie the Purge) Harley Quinn Thug, and a wastelander from FallOut.

What’s your favorite cosplay you’ve done so far and why?
Definitely Pyramid head. Everybody loves a PH hug or a choke or a high five. He’s pretty versatile when it comes to what people want. I do a bunch of crazy crossovers with PH and people seem to really love it, it has become my signature thing to do.

What’s your favorite way to craft?
Cardboard and foam because it’s really easy to work with and I can make them look like metal or wood, make them look really heavy but when you pick whatever it is up its super light. And it’s cheap and I’m all about cheapness. Cause not everybody can afford expensive materials.

What are your cosplay goals (e.g. professional, hobbyist, charity, gateway to another career, etc)?
I just want to keep on making cool stuff and improving my skills. I wanna be up there with the big boys some day and I also would like to help out the newbies that are just starting out. Would love to do some charity work with cosplay, like with Scares that Care or stuff that you guys do here in the group. But my work schedule gets in the way a lot so I’ll have to figure away around that.
What’s your dream cosplay and why?
I really don’t have a dream cosplay, my mind is to ADD to focus on one ideal cosplay. But I wouldn’t mind doing one of those Gungams or something with big armor.

What advice would you give someone who wants to get into cosplay?
I would say, go for it! If you wanna cosplay then go for it, it doesn’t matter if you make a cosplay or buy it as long as you own it. You be the best character you can and don’t let anybody tell you differently cause as long as you’re happy with what you have nothing else matters.
What other interests do you have outside of cosplay?
I like to write stories and play video games, love horror movies and eating good bbq.

If you could have dinner with one fictional character, who would it be and why?
That’s a tough one lol, I honestly don’t know, there are to many to choose from.
You can check out what Sora is up to on Facebook and Instagram
