This week’s featured member of the week is Adam C. Johnson. He participated in our Planet Comicon photography contest and came out in second place with his amazing shots and edits of Cinderella . His talent in capturing scenery is best shown in his photos he shared with us below.
What got you into photography and how long have you been doing it?
I felt a yearning for a creative outlet and had always liked photography, though never focused on it. In 2012 I decided to get serious about photography and bought a Nikon DSLR. I started doing night photography to learn how aperture, ISO, and shutter speed worked together and was instantly hooked!
What is your favorite thing to photograph?
I haven’t developed one particular favorite subject, but often shoot landscapes and anything rusty, decaying, or abandoned. I love shooting old houses, barns, and especially classic, rusting field cars.
Why did you decide to photograph cosplayers?
I’ve always enjoyed cosplayers and superheroes in general. While at Comicon, I happened upon this challenge and had a ton of fun with it. It gave me a chance to expand my skills and learn more in Photoshop. I look forward to more opportunities to work with the amazing cosplayers in the KC area and beyond!
What type of camera do you prefer to use?
I have one “real” camera, still my first DSLR. I’m a Nikon guy. I shoot with a D5100 currently but will likely be upgrading within the next 6 months.
What is your editing program of choice?
Lightroom first, HDR EFX Pro 2 second, and Photoshop third. It really depends on the concept for each particular image but I always use Lightroom for every image.
What is the best advice you’d give someone who wants to get into photography?
Buy a DSLR and tripod, shoot in RAW, get Lightroom and learn it! Anthony Morganti is the best I’ve found for learning Lightroom. I learned quickly by taking night photos because it forced me to experiment and understand how everything works together to create an image. Plus light painting is awesome!
Have you considered cosplaying?
Not seriously, but one year I spent quite a bit of time creating an Alex from Clockwork Orange costume and it was a ton of fun. I would certainly be open to it at some point with a little encouragement!
What are your other interests?
Reading a lot of Stephen King lately. KU basketball. Civ 5, Skyrim. I like rap, contemporary folk, Daft Punk. I love cruising back roads looking for interesting subjects and exploring. I’m always watching for car shows, customs and classics are the best. Tropical vacations are my favorite and I try to go somewhere exotic every couple of years.
If you could have dinner with one fictional character, who would it be and why?
I’ve always been a big Batman fan, but at the risk of sounding generic, I would have to say Superman, because c’mon, it’s Superman!
