Our Member of the Week is none other than community enthusiast Eric Maurice Person, or better known as KC Deadpool. A recent addition to the KC Cosplay and Photography family, he has jumped full force into the cosplay world. In the matter of months, he has crafted numerous costumes he plans on debuting at multiple events this year. He’s actively involved in the Kansas City community, as a cosplayer and a local activist. Check out what he has to say about cosplay, crafting, and our beautiful city.
How did you get into cosplay?
I grew up watching Spiderman on the Electric Company. I was also lucky enough to have been born during the time when Star Wars was being made. Watching the Dukes of Hazard or Knight Rider, my cousins and I would always try to act out the scenes. Watching Kung Fu movies on a Saturday and then getting sheets from grandma to make ninja outfits was something I did frequently.
I have pretty much always put any costume I have ever worn for Halloween together myself. I have friends that would throw costume parties for New Years or just for fun, usually a theme like Pirates Vs. Ninjas. I normally would attend comic book conventions or watch superhero movies with friends, just as a fan, but I broke my leg playing soccer in April of 2014, so I had a lot of downtime over the summer. I also started planning my Halloween costume after I met Deadpoool. Since he has such an elaborate get up, I had to do a lot of research and came across the KC Cosplay group, while looking at images of cosplay characters. I have always noticed people dressed as superheroes or cartoon characters and thought that it would be something I would enjoy, and it is.
How many characters are you currently cosplaying and what are they?
I am currently known for playing Deadpool. I have a Spectre fit from Resident Evil’s Umbrella Corp. that I will be debuting at Planet Comic Con. I also do a Dark Jedi/Sithpool mash up. I am in the process of deciding on a new Spider Man cosplay. I also have a Zatoichi cosplay that I will be introducing soon. In the past I have done Blade, Mace Windu, and Chalky White from Boardwalk Empire.
What’s your favorite cosplay you’ve done so far and why?
For sure Deadpool. I love Spiderman, but once I played the Deadpool game, I realized that I and the “Merc with a Mouth” had a lot in common as far as wit and sarcasm. I have always been sort of an outsider and found Wade Wilson’s personality, compatible. Although in real life, we probably wouldn’t get along because of his work ethic and then theres the killing and stuff.
I love to play Deadpool because it allows me to be a “lady’s man” as we as a “cool tough guy”. Everyone loves Deadpool, when I am playing him, its mostly boys and grown men that show the most excitement.
What’s your favorite way to craft?
I like to sit in my “Man Cave”, which is also my music studio that has pictures of Hip Hop legends all over the wall. Depending on what I am working on, I will watch the movie of that subject. If I am general crafting, I like to watch/listen to documentaries on the environment, civil activism, politics, and community. I really hate it when I run out of hot glue sticks, but Im glad CVS is open 24 hours. They have the little ones.
What’s your favorite crafting item to work with and why?
I like to work with junk. I really love finding something that is headed to the garbage or recycling bin, and turn it into a weapon or prop. Sometimes I feel like leaving my hot glue gun plugged into the wall, because I might get an ideal and have to craft up. I recently made my Sith cape using 2 pair of mens dress slacks and some hot glue. So not only did I up-cycle, but it gave the cape sort of a rugged dark spacey weathered look. I made my lightsabers out of spare PVC that I had lying around from an aquaponic installation. Anything to help me save money for paint, glue, and conventions.
What are your cosplay goals?
The biggest attraction for me was being able to volunteer and bring smiles to people of all ages. My first event ever for KCCP was the Autism Walk at Arrowhead and I had a blast. At the end of the event, I was getting ready to leave and a lady stopped me and said, “Deadpool, my grandson has got to see you!” She called him over and he sprinted across the parking lot and was yelling, “Deaaaaaadpooooooool!” He came up and gave me a high five, I could tell he wanted to hug me, but he was being tough. He was speechless after we greeted each other. I live for those moments!
What’s your dream cosplay and why?
Anything that involves a “team.” Like Voltron. All five lions at a convention, but I would also like to team up with 4 other people, to later show up in the pilots uniforms. MY second event that I did with KCCP was the Zombie crawl for hunger. I went as Deadpool, but I am really looking forward talking KC with the other Umbrella KC members. They looked really menacing keeping all of the zombies in line, but they were all really nice guys. I look forward to that kind of “play”
What advice would you give someone who wants to get into cosplay?
“Have Fun”, ask questions, know your character for sure, the kids will test you and if you don’t know your stuff, they will let you know. Sometimes kids aren’t the most subtle about it.
Hopefully everyone that is thinking about getting into cosplay will have the same kind of friends and members that are a part of KCCP. This group has welcomed me and made me feel a part of the team as well as help me and other people find the items, help, or stuff that they need to put together a successful costume, but also having fun while doing it. I haven’t been to a “non-costumed” hangout, that KCCP host, as of yet, but plan on it.
What other interests do you have outside of cosplay?
I am a husband of a wonderful woman that works as an elementary school teacher for children that have learning disabilities like Asperger’s or autism. I am daddy of a 4 year old diva and a 16 year premier soccer player, I have a music production company and am a licensed publisher. My record label is called Kinesthetic Records. We don’t have any major songs out, but I have had music featured on IFC and a few of my songs have been used for “jingles” in commercials. I produce Hip Hop, Adult Contemporary, and Neo R&B/ Soul. I also do video editing for bands and Hip Hop groups. I play indoor soccer and love video games. Pretty proud that I have taken over 800 dog tags in Battlefield 4 and I am ranked 4th in Kansas City Missouri for Melee kills in that game. I give speeches at schools about aquaponics, a method of using fish waste to grow plants and offer consultations for people that want to do it at home. I am a certified solar panel installer, have a certificate in Wind Turbine design and Residential Green Building & Energy Efficiency. I am also a community activist. I love KC.
Small Business I run:
Facebook – KC Aquaponics
If you could have dinner with one fictional character, who would it be and why?
Wow. It would probably have to be Professor X, but only because he is the closest thing to Stephen Hawking. There are some many real people that I would already love to talk to, I guess I would just want to see his thoughts on the present and future war/terrorism situations. I really want to talk to a Sumerian God to find out what they were thinking and if they are going to stop the lizard people.
