KCCP Member of the Week: Bradley Steinmetz

This week’s featured KC Cosplayer is the talented Bradley Steinmetz. He used his creativity with latex to create an epic Venom from Spiderman. KCCP is proud to share his story and upcoming projects with you.

How did you get into cosplay?
Honestly, I’ve been going to Comic-Con’s for years. Been collecting comics since I was a kid and then my cousin, Mike Steinmetz, started to build costumes and go to events. I was jealous as I could see how much fun him and his other cosplay buddies were having and knew I had to be part of that world. Plus just admiring the creativity of everyone I wanted to create something that people would like.

How many characters are you currently cosplaying and what are they?
One currently, Venom!!!! He is the Ultimate anti-hero. Shunned by his original host that bonded with someone that hated parker just as much – Eddie Brock. My next project will be Green Goblin but still in the mask molding stages.

What’s your favorite cosplay you’ve done so far and why?
Definitely Venom. I’ve learned so many techniques while building this costume. Foam shaping, material skinning, latex curing and application, painting, tape etching symbol.

What’s your favorite way to craft?
In my garage with a cold beer, good music and a goal set in mind. When I’m crafting its like all of my current problems go away for a while as I try and bring my favorite characters to life. Normally work with a mannequin as a base then form my suit around it.

What’s your favorite crafting item to work with and why?
Monster liquid latex and clay. So far, and i know I’m pretty new to crafting, their products are top of the line. Have not had a rip at all with my venom suit and while molding my green goblin mask I have been able to shape and reuse the clay pretty easily for an amateur.

What are your cosplay goals (e.g. professional, hobbyist, charity, gateway to another career, etc)?
My cosplay goal is to eventually start my own FX company. Would love to make cosplay products for a living. Plus, the more costumes I could make the more I could do charity events to raise money for good organizations.

What’s your dream cosplay and why?
My dream cosplay would be another Venom or Carnage suit with actual webshooters and a moving tongue. I’ve made some specs and drawings but the mechanics are another skill I need to learn. Also, a goblin glider that would be able to be driven at conventions.

What advice would you give someone who wants to get into cosplay?
Patience. Something I’ve had to cope with myself. I jumped into it thinking I could get a black zenrai suit and some foam and be done in 1 month. Of course it depends on your project but 1 month turned to 2 then 3 finally 4. Which is not always a bad thing. I was missing out on events but was learning so many things building that I now have for future projects.

What other interests do you have outside of cosplay?
My wife and kids. We do everything together and i love my family. I also collect Venom comics and figures and play drums.

If you could have dinner with one fictional character, who would it be and why?
Guardians of the galaxy movie version of Starlord. Not only could I learn about intergalactic travels but the comedic one liners during dinner would be classic. Plus, he would have some good tunes to listen too while drinking some brewskies.
