KCCP Member of the Week: Paco Gonzalez

Our Member of the Week is our very own Dark Knight, Paco Gonzalez. Paco has created a custom Batman cosplay and enjoys crafting with EVA foam. He is also a player in the community, helping KCCP organize an appearance in Garden City, MO’s annual fall festival parade with Kylie’s Crusaders!

How did you get into cosplay?
I was looking for a Batman costume about 5 years ago and they all looked terrible and cheap so I thought I’d just try and make one. I found an instructables page on a duct tape Batman cowl so I went for it. I had such a blast doing it, I decided to create the rest of my suit out of duct tape. It really opened my eyes to how fun it is.

How many characters are you currently cosplaying and what are they?
So far I’ve only done Batman. My first suit was Arkham Asylum Batman and my current one is a personal design of a Batsuit.

What’s your favorite cosplay you’ve done so far and why?
My personal one is my favorite so far because I really just took my time with it and made it completely my own. And I also worked to make it as comfortable as possible.

What’s your favorite way to craft?
My garage is my workshop and I make sure I’m fully loaded with podcasts on my phone and hook it up to a big speaker while I work. The crafting gets my brain going so I’m learning loads while I’m creating. Win/win. ha

What’s your favorite crafting item to work with and why?
So far, I’m really having fun with EVA foam. Learning how to texturize it, its malleability, and painting it. I’m starting to get my feet wet in sewing which I did well at in high school so that may be fun down the road.

What are your cosplay goals (e.g. professional, hobbyist, charity, gateway to another career, etc)
I love the charity work opportunities of cosplay and I’d like to make some masks, helmets, props to sell at a slow and steady rate.

What’s your dream cosplay and why?
89 Keaton Batman. That’s where my obsession began.

What advice would you give someone who wants to get into cosplay?
Do your homework. There are so many ways to create costumes. Its all about finding your strengths and going for it.

What other interests do you have outside of cosplay?
I love movies, soccer, and spending time with my wife and son.

If you could have dinner with one fictional character, who would it be and why?
