Happy November, cosplay lovers! For our first featured member this month, we are highlighting Ian Turner. He brings the most unique spins to all of your favorite characters, giving each of his cosplays the creative detail that put them over the top.
How did you get into cosplay?
I guess it would have started when I was really young. I always loved Halloween and dressing up as characters and creatures from movies. Every Halloween I would choose a costume that was unique and that no one else would do. In 5th grade I dressed as a 60’s Go-Go dancer with a neon purple beehive wig and dress. No one else had that costume, I can tell ya that.
But actual cosplay I would say I started around my Senior year in High school in 2011. I was going to a local con here and for the Halloween prior I made myself a Two-Face cosplay. That was my first “big” cosplay. So I decided to take it to the con with me. I got so many positive comments and responses on it, I thought to myself, “This could be something I could get into.” The rest is history.
How many characters are you currently cosplaying and what are they?
Currently I have four Characters and two that are works in progress.
- Death Eater from Harry Potter
- Two-Face from Batman
- Genderbent Harley Quinn from Batman
- Genderbent Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty/Maleficent
What’s your favorite cosplay you’ve done so far and why?
By far, my Genderbent Harley Quinn! I absolutely love the character and have ever since I first saw her in the original Batman: The Animated Series back in the 90’s. I have gotten so many pictures taken of me in this cosplay or of others who want the picture with me. Everyone says how unique it is and how unique my take and look of the character is. I absolutely love it when people say that. I took Harley with me to SDCC in 2013 and there was a huge Harley and Joker cosplayer meetup there. I loved it there and they loved my Harley. You don’t see many male Harleys out there so I love leaving my mark.
What’s your favorite way to craft?
Just to sit and design. I put on my music, usually something by Nightwish or something with rock or a movie soundtrack, and just go to town. I like to design for a few weeks to a month depending on the cosplay so I can research my options on crafting and budget my cash flow.
What’s your favorite crafting item to work with and why?
For the first time I used worbla for my armor chest piece for my Maleficent cosplay. That was fun and I hope to use it again. Other than that I would just say whatever fabric, paints, and various other little things I have laying around.
What are your cosplay goals?
Honestly, I am just doing this for fun. I love to dress up and embody the character I am wearing for however long I am at the event. I mean, how many people can say yeah I was Two-Face yesterday and now I am Maleficent today or whatever your cosplays are? Down the road if it leads to something professional or to an actual career, then i would gladly take those offers. But for now, I do it for the fun of it and to create new and unique takes on characters and such.
What’s your dream cosplay and why?
Without a doubt something from the Star Wars universe. I have always loved Star Wars and to be a character of my own design or species from there would just be amazing.
What advice would you give someone who wants to get into cosplay?
Start small. Don’t go for something that’s gonna break your bank and leave your wallet dry. And if you think that you aren’t the right body type, or race or gender or whatever it may be, never think that. I have done so far two genderbent cosplays with more on the way. I happen to not be the skinniest or most muscled guy in the world. I never let that stop me from creating something I love and that other people will appreciate as well. If you ever become stumped on how to make something or sew, go online. Youtube has pretty much any kind of tutorial out there or try and find some local cosplayers you can be friends with who can maybe help out. And finally just have fun when you’re doing it. It can get a little stressful at times but don’t let that discourage you from finishing your awesome cosplay. It is meant to be fun, just have a great time at the con or event you’re going to and be proud of what you have created.
What other interests do you have outside of cosplay?
I love to hang out with my friends, make movies, just nerd out and be myself. I have many interests. You would just have to get to know me to find out what they all are.
If you could have dinner with one fictional character, who would it be and why?
I would have to say Mystique from X-Men. She is such a complex character and has been alive for a good long while it seems so she would have some interesting stories to tell.
