We’re featuring the lovely Jess Jones this week! She fills us in on her drama days that inevitably lead to her cosplaying, her cosplaying kids, and the many costumes up her sleeve.
How did you get into cosplay?
As a child, I always loved to dress up. About 5 years ago, I started handling for some members of the 501st and realized I had to do this. So I got my first costume! Also I have been very active in the local community theaters and always love being able to dress up as someone else. A few years ago I got cast as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz and loved after the show how many kids would wanted pictures and my autograph. It’s wonderful to see the smiles on their faces!
How many characters are you currently cosplaying and what are they?
I currently have a Twi’lek Jedi, Batgirl, Femtrooper, FemPunisher, Dorothy, FemCaptain Jack from Doctor Who, and will be getting my Guri from Star Wars in a few weeks.
What’s your favorite cosplay you’ve done so far and why?
I really like my Batgirl. I’m currently working on some changes to it to make it more authentic but I like to have my own twists on the characters I cosplay.
What’s your favorite way to craft?
I have always had my costumes commissioned but I’ve recently been learning to sew. It’s a slow process but I’m sure I will pick it up soon.
What’s your favorite crafting item to work with and why?
I really like working with foam. I have been teaching myself how to sculpt with it. Again, it’s a slow process, but once I get it, I should be able to make some pretty interesting things! Right now, it’s just small things for my kids costumes.
What are your cosplay goals?
For me, cosplay has always been about just having fun. I love meeting new people, helping with charities, and just seeing the kids faces when you are dressed as their favorite character.
What’s your dream cosplay and why?
I have way too many dream cosplay costumes. But right now it’s Anderson from Dredd. I’m a huge Dredd fan and would love to have the armor!
What advice would you give someone who wants to get into cosplay?
Just have fun! I see too many people being so serious and judgmental about costumes. We all should be there to make someone else’s day better. The cosplay community is like a family!
What other interests do you have outside of cosplay?
I am very active in the local theaters. I love being on stage in musicals and plays. I love to sing whenever I get the chance. I also love comic books. I have two children and love being a mommy! My kids are both into cosplay and theatre!
If you could have dinner with one fictional character, who would it be and why?
Batman! I have always been a huge Batman fan and would just love to pick his brain!!
