KCCP Member of the Week: Hillary Lewis

A new Tuesday means a new KCCP member gets to show off their skills!  And that member is Hillary Lewis!  She’s an incredibly skilled cosplayer and model, using all of her talents to pump out costume after costume.  Now you can learn some of her many secrets to how she does it all!

How did you get into cosplay?

I have loved dressing up and role playing since I was kid. Once I started getting into comics and going to cons about 5 years ago cosplaying was a no-brainer! My first costume was a Harley Quinn. I really enjoyed making it and loved the reactions I got from wearing it at cons so after that I was hooked!

How many characters are you currently cosplaying and what are they?

I have a ton of costumes, it’s actually difficult to remember them all.  I have a bad habit of not wanting to wear a costume more than a few times. I’m constantly trying to make a better, more interesting costume. Some of my cosplays have been Zatanna, Black Cat, Huntress, Mera, Batwoman, Death, Wonder Woman, and Supergirl.

What’s your favorite cosplay you’ve done so far and why?

My favorite cosplay I’ve done so far is Mera. It is the first costume that I made completely by myself and the first costume I used Worbla on (and I love using Worbla). Even though Mera isn’t a super popular,  I really love her character so cosplaying her was a lot of fun. I also convinced my husband to do Aquaman with me and cosplaying as a couple was amazing!

What’s your favorite way to craft?

When crafting I love to learn new ways to do things and new materials to use. First, I choose a costume and then I research the best way to make the pieces for it. Then I watch a ton of videos on how to do it! There is also a lot of trial and error involved.

What’s your favorite crafting item to work with and why?

My favorite crafting item is definitely Worbla. It is fun to work with, versatile, and the results look amazing. I want to make more costumes I can use it on. Once I get a little more experienced with it, I want to make a full armor costume out of Worbla.

What are your cosplay goals?

Right now my goals are to just improve my cosplay skills, make better costumes, and have fun. I also want to start doing some charity work in costume. Obviously the dream is to be able to do cosplay as a career but that is very difficult so I’m not holding my breath!

What’s your dream cosplay and why?

It seems like I come up with a new dream cosplay every other week.  I would love to do Grace from Soulfire. She is a beautiful character and her costume is basically just armor pieces so I could use a lot of Worbla! My other dream cosplays are Angela (from Spawn) and Magdalena (from the Witchblade series). These are all characters I really love and cosplaying is always more fun when you enjoy being that particular character.

What advice would you give someone who wants to get into cosplay?

I would say talk to other cosplayers! Most of them (at least in KC) are really nice and can give a lot of helpful advice. It is also helpful to do research and watch a bunch of youtube videos. Also, you don’t need a professional looking costume to cosplay. Just have fun with it.

What other interests do you have outside of cosplay?

Well, obviously I love to read and collect comic books. I am obsessed with watching movies (especially horror movies) and my nerdy TV shows. I also love to swim and I am a volunteer coach for my synchronized swimming team!

If you could have dinner with one fictional character, who would it be and why?

Thats a tough one… probably Leon from the Resident Evil series. He is badass and sexy. Also, if a zombie apocalypse breaks out during dinner, he is definitely the best person to be with.
