KCCP Member of the Week: Shane DeMink

It’s Thursday! That can only mean that it’s time to meet a new KCCP member. This week we’re featuring Shane DeMink.  He’s a rare, and talented, cosplayer who stays in character and puts Johnny Depp to shame in so many ways!

How did you get into cosplay?

I made a Captain Jack  costume for Halloween. I’ve always been interested in acting, so it was a natural progression.

How many characters are you currently cosplaying and what are they?

I have 3 so far; Captain Jack, Batman, and a Jedi Knight.

What’s your favorite cosplay you’ve done so far and why?

Captain Jack. People have such an incredible reaction to him.  I have a great time with it. He tends to attract a lot of attention.

What’s your favorite way to craft?

I like to plan ahead, assemble the supplies and materials, try to get it done before I need it. I figure two out of three isn’t bad.

What’s your favorite crafting item to work with and why?

I don’t really have a specific favorite, though foam is proving to be insanely versatile, which is cool.

What are your cosplay goals (e.g. professional, hobbyist, charity, gateway to another career, etc)?

Use the skills I’ve got, and will continue to develop, to aid in making independent movies.

What’s your dream cosplay and why?

Darth Vader. He’s the original bad ass.

What advice would you give someone who wants to get into cosplay?

Don’t worry if you think you’re not good enough, just do it. The more practice you have, the better you’ll get. And pick something you’re into. Don’t just wear a costume, be that character. That’s what people will remember about you. A crack in the armor you’re wearing, a piece that doesn’t look quite right will be forgotten if you stay true to the character.

What other interests do you have outside of cosplay?

Writing, reading, video games, working on my ’79 Camaro, and . . . oh yeah, working on independent movies.

If you could have dinner with one fictional character, who would it be and why?

That’s a tough one. Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman. I’ve always liked Catwoman anyways, but Pfeiffer’s was my favorite. Whether she was Selina or in costume, I think it would be an interesting dinner. Captain Jack came in a real close second though. Imagine the hell two Jacks could raise.
