Double dose of Dennis week! If you didn’t get a chance to check out Dennis’s podcast this week with the group, here’s your chance to catch up with the great builder himself. He offers up some great cosplay tips and reveals his plans for world domination.
How did you get into cosplay?
After i met my wife, I did some living history with my father in law. He taught me about period clothing and making it, but it wasn’t until Star Wars and Lord of the Rings came out that I just had to have chainmail and bows and blasters and lightsabers. I couldn’t afford them so I learned how to make them.
How many characters are you currently cosplaying and what are they?
I currently cosplay Rorschach from The Watchmen and Predator. At the moment, I still have lots of unfinished costumes and props like a Halo Master Chief, Thomas from Daft Punk, Sweetums from The Muppets, Thor, Orc and some surprises for later
What’s your favorite cosplay you’ve done so far and why?
Definitely my Predator. It’s been an ongoing work in progress. I’m always maintaining and upgrading pieces. It was over a year in the making and I have used so many different techniques on the suit that I feel more confident with other builds.
What’s your favorite way to craft?
I like to watch movies but I also like to watch tutorial videos on sculpting, molding, painting, etc. I like watching 20 different people end up with the same result but do it 20 different ways. You can find a way to fit your needs and skill level that way.
What’s your favorite crafting item to work with and why?
FOAM!! You can sculpt it, paint it, wear it. You can get it almost anywhere, in any size, color, shape. It really is an incredible material to use. If you get one piece right, mold it and cast it in any other material. And it’s cheap!
What are your cosplay goals?
I would love to take my hobby to the next level, but as of now, my main focus is getting my wife through school. She has a few years left, so in the mean time, I’m still going to build, get out, have fun, and build a portfolio
What’s your dream cosplay and why?
I would love to put my own take on all the universal monsters: Wolfman, Frankenstein, Creature from Black Lagoon, Dracula, and The Mummy. I love putting smiles on peoples faces because I scared them and they later tell me that after they had to go home and watch the movie.
What advice would you give someone who wants to get into cosplay?
Do your research and learn the materials. Saftey is a big part of building and some of the materials are not good for your health in certain forms. Wear protective gear when working with power tools. No project is worth the safety of you or others. Above all, have fun and think outside the box. After all, you are the only reason you don’t have a cosplay.
What other interests do you have outside of cosplay?
Movies, books, my family, teaching two mice to take over the world…
If you could have dinner with one fictional character, who would it be and why?
I would say Groot. I can only imagine all the intellectual conversations we could have over a salad.
