In our new weekly feature, we’re showing off one by one all of the incredible members belonging to KCCP. First up is Baroness Von T; a member who has been very active since the creation of KCCP, appearing at four of the last six events, despite not being local at all.
Here’s what the Baroness had to say about cosplay!
How did you get into cosplay?
I was asked by a friend if I would like to go to Planet Comic Con with her in Kansas City! As the event got closer, she asked if I wanted to wear a costume with her! Sure, why not? She offered to let me wear her Princess Leia costume since she was costuming with the Rebel Legion and 501st (groups I had never heard of at the time!). Once we got out on the Con floor, I was absolutely shocked by the way people stopped and asked if they could take our picture. A small girl was tugging on her mother saying “Mommy! Mommy! It’s Princess Leia!” And the smile that spread across her face when I posed with her is what made me fall in love. I thought it was the best feeling in the world to bring a child so much joy simply by wearing a costume!
How many characters are you currently cosplaying?
I currently have 7 that are finished and wearable! I’ve got 4 more that are in progress on my crafting table at home.
What’s your favorite way to craft?
Drunk. Haha I kid. I haven’t found one style or way I suppose. For me, it is more of a “well, let’s throw this together and see what happens” and from there I figure out what did or didn’t work and improve upon it.
What’s your favorite crafting item to work with?
I have an interesting relationship with Worbla. I’d definitley classify it as a Love/Hate relationship. So, whether to call that my favorite or not is questionable…but I’ll go ahead and say it is my favorite.
What’s your dream cosplay?
Anya Stroud from Gears of War. Hopefully I’ll have her build started within the year.
What’s your favorite cosplay you’ve done?
Suprisingly, I ended up really loving my Fem Bane costume. It was a “what do I have around the house that can be a Batman costume in less than 45 minutes” type deal. My fiance was Bane for Halloween the previous year, so I threw different pieces together, and I loved how it turned out! Simple to wear, comfortable (for the most part) and I get great reactions from people!!
What advice would you give to someone who wants to get into cosplay?
Just Do It! It is the most welcoming and friendly community of people, and it is fun! It’s amazing. Don’t wait. Don’t put it off and say “maybe next time.” Just freaking do it. You can thank me later.
What other interests do you have?
I love hunting and shooting and planning for the impending apocalypse. I enjoy playing video games with my friends. I like to drink beer. I also like poetry, long walks on the beach, and poking dead things with a stick.
What are your cosplay goals?
I wouldn’t have chosen this hobby without the Charity bit. Also very therapeutic. There is something to be said about being able to engulf yourself in a costume build. Get away from the real world, pick any character, and be whoever you want to. Everyone needs a way to escape.
If you could have dinner with one fictional character, who would it be and why?
I’m going to Dean Winchester. The why part doesn’t need an explanation. He is Dean Freaking Winchester.
Thanks for hearing from me! Lots of love from The Baroness!!
